Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was livid with the decision to allow Newcastle’s goal against his team on Saturday to stand.

There were several controversial incidents in the build-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal and there were other flashpoints during the game.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg gives his verdict on the decisions for Mail Sport.

Newcastle’s goal against Arsenal should have been ruled out for Joelinton’s foul on Gabriel

47 min: Bruno Guimaraes elbow

Correct decision not to send off

Had Stuart Attwell sent off Bruno Guimaraes and not Kai Havertz for his earlier tackle he’d have lost the respect of the players. Bruno didn’t use his arm as a weapon, he just left it there, but a yellow would have been right.

Stuart Attwell was right not to send off Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for an elbow

64 min: Ball out of play

Correct decision

There wasn’t a camera angle available to the VAR that could have conclusively ruled that the ball was out of play, so the on-field decision has to stand.

It couldn’t be conclusively ruled that the ball went out of play before Joe Willock crossed it

64 min: Joelinton push

Incorrect decision

The whole goal didn’t feel right and if there was a moment to disallow it then it was this as Joelinton clearly pushed Gabriel.

Joelinton clearly pushed Gabriel and Newcastle’s goal should have been ruled out

64 min: Gordon offside

Correct decision

This happens a lot where players block the cameras, meaning the VAR couldn’t draw the lines and conclusively rule out the goal for offside. Again, the on-field decision has to stand.

PS: Here’s one that Arteta was probably happy with!

36 min: Havertz tackle

Correct decision

People will watch it in slow-motion and say ‘he’s off the floor’ but there wasn’t enough contact from Havertz to justify a red card.
