Arsenal and Tottenham could hand £50m each to the same club in January window

Arsenal and Tottenham could both hand Real Sociedad over £50million in the January transfer window. The north London sides are reportedly interested in signing two separate players from the Basque club.

Arsenal and Tottenham have already played out a thrilling draw in the Premier League this season. Spurs came from behind twice to take a point from the Emirates in September.

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side are surprise title contenders, although Mikel Arteta will be hoping to go one better after last term’s disappointment. The January window will provide an opportunity for the two managers to add further depth and quality to their respective squads.

And it appears they both may have the same idea of recruiting from Spain. Arsenal continue to be linked with Martin Zubimendi, while Spurs are now said to be interested in Brais Mendez.

Mendez has a release clause in his Sociedad contract of around £52m. Spanish outlet Sport claims Tottenham could make an offer for the 26-year-old in the winter.

Zubimendi, meanwhile, also has a clause at a similar price in his contract. Arsenal were keen on signing him last January and Caught Offside says he remains of interest to them.

Sociedad will have no power to stop both players from leaving if their release clauses are triggered. The La Liga side could therefore be in line to receive up to £104m for the pair.

Mendez joined Sociedad from Celta Vigo in the summer of 2022. He has had a fine start to the campaign, with five goals and four assists, including scoring in each Champions League group stage match so far.

He has played the majority of his football in central midfield so far this term. However, he can play further forward and would provide an alternative option to James Maddison for Postecoglou.

Mendez has won four caps for Spain, the last of which came in 2021. Zubimendi has also played twice for his country, recently coming on in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia in September.

The 24-year-old has spent his entire professional career to date at Sociedad. He operates in defensive midfield and has already played over 150 games at senior level.

Zubimendi last signed a contract with Sociedad in October 2022 to extend his deal until the summer of 2027. Mendez, meanwhile, signed a six-year contract when he joined to commit him to Sociedad until 2028.
